Photo of the day – 10 years in the making

Posted in My Story 私の物語, Photo of the day 今日の写真 on February 4, 2009 by Mervin

Time surely passes quickly. It’s almost 10 years since we took that picture in Grandpa’s house. Luckily the house is owned by his youngest son now, our ‘Be ku’.

A big thank to Gordon for providing the old photo. Mom, who took the shot, ‘Ko po’ who help us with the positions, Nicholas and Mun, for their wonderful cooperation (haha) and all the relatives who were there and had fun throughout  the process.

Looking forward to 20 years in the making :P

We shall we if we are still able to fit into the stairs.

Sun bird

Blue tailed bee eater

This was my first bird shot taken 2 weeks ago while i was doing my research at Pulau Burung.

The place is called Pulau Burung because there are a lot of migratory birds as well as local birds nesting and feeding in that location.

But unfortunately that place is also a landfill site for Penang state. Big part of the mangrove forest has been cleared to get a place to ’store’ your dumps!  Yes you… i’m talking about your dumps penangites!!

It is raining season this months, the leachate collected from the landfill site has overflown and drained out to the nearby streams and rivers.  Sad case…  I think i should post some photos of the leachate pond and rubbish mountains next time.  I wonder how long these birds can survive in this area.

Only time will tell…

The days were 22, 23 and 24 of November.

Partly Cloudy, it was really cold.

But

The Trip was AMAZING & WONDERFUL.

The warmth of the red autume leaves and the people of Japan has made the trip enjoyable and memorable.

Photo of the Day – Castella

Posted in My Story 私の物語, Photo of the day 今日の写真 with tags on October 31, 2007 by Mervin

My friend bought me Castella cake which is famous food from Nagasaki City. It tastes GREAT! Oishii!! Yummy
The texture is more or less like cheese cakes, but with different flavour.

castella

Castella or Kasutera (Japanese: カステラ) is a sponge cake made of sugar, flour, eggs, and starch syrup. It is popular at festivals and as a street food in Japan. Now a specialty of Nagasaki, the cake is thought to be originally from Spain, brought by way of Portuguese merchants in the 16th century. The name is derived from Portuguese pão de Castela, meaning “bread from Castile“. Castella cake is usually sold in long boxes, with the cake inside being approximately 27cm long. It is somewhat similar to English madeira cake, also associated with Portugal. Note that there are similar types of sponge cakes named after the same fashion, in French: Pain d’Espagne, in Italian: Pan di Spagna, in Greek: Pantespani (Castile is a former kingdom of Spain comprising its central provinces, thus “Pain d’Espagne’ is quasi synonymous to “bread from Castile”).

Photo of the day – Go Flex!

tupperware

Recently i’m quite busy with the initiation of the container campaign for USM. Well the objective is simple. To promote the use of own container when take away food. First it reduce the use of polystyrene. Second this way we can minimise waste. As simple as that…

When i came back from Penang yesterday night. My mom showed me that she got a free gift from tupperware. She is a big fan of tupperware. The whole kitchen cabinets store all her tupperware collection. The free gift is ‘go Flex!’. At first, i thought it was a plate. But when she magically open up the lid cover, it actually turned into a container. Hehe… are you thinking what i’m thinking?? If i could introduce this during the campaign, it could be a great hit! It save space and you can take it with you anytime. When you need it, it opens up and give you 950ml. Yes 950ml of storage space. This is way too cool i’m telling you!!
Unfortunately the cost of this is RM35 each. It’s kind of expensive for average students. But don’t worry USMian, our Kelab Alam Sekitar would provide you with an excellence prices! (Making appointment with the Manager now and hopefully can get a better quotation). Wish me luck if you are reading this.

So, dear friends of the Earth, What are you waiting for? It’s time to shift…

Bag bag

This is a bag which i bought from Guardian for RM2. In support to reduce the use of plastic bags. It a bag that can zipped into the size of a pencil case. So it is quite convenient to be carried in your bag and can be used to carry the items that you buy. A good start right?

Well, my friends, let’s try to reduce the use of plastics bags k? They are non-biodegradable! In other words it stays in the soil forever and ever…. forever and ever…

If you din’t bring any bag when you buy stuffs, go JUSCO! their plastic bags are biodegradable… way to go JUSCO! Horray to JUSCO!
