Key to your GREEN Career

Are you graduating soon? Have you ever think of what type of career you would like to venture into?

I, myself have been an environment activists in school and university for a few years now. But sometimes i wonder will i able to continue to do what i’m passionate in? If i work full time in environmental NGOs how far will i get?
Are you facing the same dilemma?

Here are some things that i realised after attending a few conferences and workshop. The key is to venture into GREEN career! We can choose to work existing green careers or start our own green business. Green business will be the next thing after IT. Do you agree?

So you might ask, how to find that new career? What is the first best step to start?

I adopted this from greencareercentral which i found it quite useful. I invite you to read the article.

What i can show you is the outline of the article by Carol McClelland.

We can start by discovering our green niche. What type of industry or prefession are you most interested in? The industry that you interested has any direct/indirect impact or  direct/indirect benefits towards the environment.  What position allow you to use your passions, interests, talents and experience?

What Carol McClelland mention in her article is very true. We need to spend some time on thinking about the kind of work setting that makes you feel good and be productive. Do you want to be in large corporation or in a small office? To work inside or outside? Do you like meeting and talking to people?

What is your possibilities? Start with online research when you have two or three career ideas in mind. Do some informational interview to understand your target industries/professions. Online research will help you to formulate your questions that you want to ask.  You can always seek for advice from green career central.

As for myself, i’m passionate in starting my own green business.

In short,  my idea is to collecting food waste, kitchen waste and other organic wastes from restaurants, mall, hypermarkets and hotels and turning them into organic fertilizers! The bottom line of this project is to support my cause of protecting the environment!

3 things i want to acheive here
1) save tons of wastage produced everyday before it end up in the landfill. You can help to save the environment by helping me so that i can get it work.

2) mass produce organic fertilizers to encourage farmers to start or to switch into organic farming. Can you imagine our live surrounded by food free of chemical fertilizers and pesticides? It’s our health and safety that counts!

3) Help the poor farmers. I can provide them with good fertillizers so that they can have better quality yield to sell and improve their livelihood.

  1. i used to face that kind of dilemma too. but somehow i came to realise that it doesn’t matter where u work u r still doing ur bits to saving the environment. but i’m sure if u get to work in an ENGO or any environmentally related companies, u would feel much more satisfied in life and in goals. but but…

based on my experience, my ideal work idea before has changed after i have been working for 2 years. my interest in the environmental field has also been gradually changed from working on the field to working behind the scenes like writing and such.

so my point here is be open to all kinds of job opportunities when u just graduate. it’s alright if u didn’t get ur ideal job on ur first job but just don’t give up on ur ideals. u would be very lucky if u happens to land on ur ideal job on ur first try!

so speaking of which, u MUST win the nescafe isn’t it? 😀
